Whilst the kids were having swimmming lessons I opened up one of the books I borrowed from the SMB library on Saturday about library mashups.
Well, I think I now know what a mashup is, and I think our library website could do with a mashup!! The boring static web site can come alive using mashups.
A mashup is a web application that can use content from many sources to create an amazing single new service (Fichter, 2009). What does that mean?
I could combine the address and photo of our library branch with a Google map to create a map mashup just for a start - now I know what it is you see them everywhere on websites
Mashups come in all shapes and sizes. They can mix and mash search results, newsfeeds & photos (Fichter, 2009).
I will keep reading and think about amazing ways to improve our website!!!
Have a look at Fichter, D (2009). What is a Mashup. In N.C. Engard (Ed.), Library mashups : exploring new ways to deliver library data (pp. 3-17.)Medford, NJ:Information Today.

Hi Davida
ReplyDeleteGreat post.
Oh dear reading at swimming lessons is dangerous - have you ever had the children dancing to go after the lesson because the book is so good & maybe tempted to let them buy a drink or something so you can keep reading? ?? cough oh must be just that um friend um ...
Google maps mashup for the library: That's a great idea particularly for a public library. I thought hey what about my library and then realise that academic libraries usually need campus maps rather than google maps ... but yes I loved that book too - I wonder if this link to the book: Library Mashups in UB's library would work to send people straight to it to place a hold request?
I really wanted to include my first link to Library Mashups but wasn't quite sure what to do - another skill to conquer..Thanks for your support & enthusiasm

ReplyDeleteLuv what you have done on your blog you are certainly getting the hang of all this. You and Amelia are really inspiring me. I too was a little unsure of referencing info. on the web pages. Still learning such a lot!
